Brampton is a city in Ontario, Canada, and the seat of the Peel Region. It’s part of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and has a population of 656,480 as of 2021. This makes it Canada’s ninth most populous city and the third in the Greater Golden Horseshoe area, after Toronto and Mississauga. Brampton is bordered by Vaughan, Halton Hills, Caledon, Mississauga, and Etobicoke. The city was named after a town in England. It became a village in 1853, a town in 1873, and a city in 1974. Its modern form emerged from merging several townships and communities. Once dubbed “The Flower Town of Canada” for its greenhouses and floriculture in the 1860s, Brampton now carries the slogan “Flower City.”Recently, Brampton has seen significant population growth. Despite being designed for cars, it boasts a robust transit system, serving about 226,500 riders daily in early 2024. The majority of its population is of South Asian descent.
