Las Vegas, or Vegas, is Nevada’s most populous city and Clark County’s seat. It’s the largest city in the Mojave Desert and the second-largest in the Southwestern U.S. Known for its gambling, shopping, dining, entertainment, and nightlife, Las Vegas is a major resort city. Most activities are centred in downtown and along the Las Vegas Strip. The valley is Nevada’s financial, commercial, and cultural hub. In 2020, it had 641,903 residents, with a metropolitan population of 2,227,053, making it the 25th largest U.S. city. Dubbed the Entertainment Capital of the World, Las Vegas boasts large casino hotels. It attracts over 40.8 million visitors each year, ranking among America’s top tourist destinations. The city is also a leading venue for business conventions and tops in hospitality, with more AAA Five Diamond hotels than anywhere else. Its adult entertainment policies have earned it the nickname “Sin City” and made it a popular backdrop in media. Las Vegas was founded in 1905 and incorporated in 1911. By the end of the 20th century, it was North America’s fastest-growing city. The population surged from 1990 to 2000, nearly doubling. Often, the name Las Vegas extends beyond city limits, especially to areas on or near the Strip, which are actually in Paradise and Winchester.
